Why must I have my teeth cleaned at your office if I brush and floss well at home?

We congratulate you on your good habits! They are essential, but they are not a substitute for professional care. The products you buy at the store and the techniques you use at home have limitations. Since disease-causing plaque is constantly building on the teeth, it can harden into tartar. This substance is incredibly stubborn and requires professional tools and a well-trained hand to remove. Without the expertise of our dental hygienists, tartar would stick around and cause new or worsening decay and gum disease.

How do your hygienists clean my teeth?

The “standard” dental cleaning or prophylaxis involves using a dental scaler or water stream to lift sticky bacterial plaque and stubborn tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and at the gumline. This thorough process includes removing harmful substances from the front, back, and sides of each tooth. Skillfully performed professional teeth cleanings help to significantly minimize the risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, the leading causes of tooth loss.

How often do I need to have my teeth cleaned at your office?

Many of the leading dental organizations in the country, including the American Dental Association, recommend that checkups be scheduled twice a year. During these checkups, comprehensive exams are performed as well as the prophylaxis or “prophy.” For many people, cleanings and exams scheduled once every six months are sufficient. However, more frequent checkups would be recommended if you are at greater risk of oral disease or if we need to monitor how well treatments are working. So, schedules for these preventive services can vary from person to person.

Are all cleanings the same?

We refer to the prophy as a standard cleaning to distinguish it from the “deep cleaning.” Our team is led by two dentists, Drs. Alejandro Piedra and Robert Weishoff. Dr. Weishoff is a specialist in periodontics. As a periodontist, he has special expertise in treating gum disease. If we find signs of gum disease, a deep cleaning, scaling, and root planing may be recommended. This service treats more deeply than the prophy. It cleans underneath the gums and involves “planing” or smoothing out the root surfaces of the teeth. By smoothing rough root surfaces, planing inhibits the accumulation of plaque and other harmful substances. It also helps to encourage healing and the reattachment of these soft, supportive tissues to the teeth.
